Who uses jabber for IM? Does anyone even use IM or think it is useful or relevant? Oh yeah..., what's your favorite jabber client for linux?

For me the only real advantage I can see for IM over email, is not having to go back and delete messages from your inbox after a conversation. Being able to see another's presence or status is nice too.

Personally i love IM as a work medium. Ryan and I use it alot to have conversation all the time about work and what not. it's like having a coworker there but not having to listen to his bad music. In addition, the conversation pace can go really fast or slow depending on how busy the other person is. It's great for going back into logs too and pulling up old conversations.

the thing i like most about

the thing i like most about IM is the speed.

email is annoying because i have to tab to it, open a new message, add attachments, et al and it just doesn't generally integrate with the OS the way IM seems to.

and i like what you say, WylieAK, about having to delete messages, archiving sent items, etc is indeed a pain in the arse.

IM is fast, friendly and format-independent : i like GAIM because it's small and it runs on anything. on the Mac, it's Adium natively or you can run purist GAIM via DarwinPorts.

i'm setting up an iChat server presently [one of my last projects before moving out of IT] and it is pretty neato, too, built on the Jabber platform, supports SSL connections, streaming content, etc.
