Making themes for Drupal 6.x
heyas...
ryness has piqued my interest with his in drupal and so i have installed 6.1 on shapah.com/net and have been playing with it some, most specifically attempting to learn something about creating themes, as drupal is specific version to version, meaning any mods/themes made for version 4.x only work with 4.x and not 5.x and so forth.
since 6.x is pretty fresh, there aren't many themes currently available and so i thot i'd give a go at making my own. i've been using the Theme Starter built using the Adobe AIR runtime environment and wonder if ryness or anyone else has used it and can offer any tips or tricks here ?
i like the themes you have going on here and at freeryan.com and wouldn't even mind building something out from those - nothing like polishing up thee ole CSS/XHTML skills, aye, fellas?

Haven't used Air. Just started taking apart existing themes to make new ones. The one site we did from scratch we designed it, contracted out the coding into XHTML, and then I chopped it up in the page.tpl.php. Pretty easy. Now, when you get into over-riding theme or module functions, that's where the power of Drupal is unleashed.
so far [and i admit i'm coming into this with some bias towards wordpress] i am not very impressed.
wordpress' structure *seems* much more straightforward and has APIs aplenty whereas drupal *seems* much further behind the curve in some areas.
spending mass amounts of time boondoggling around in the forums is not appealing for me.
still, i'm curious about this *power* you speak of that is unleashed in drupal.
so i will keep tinkering.

Stay tuned... I'm working on (amidst a gazillion other things) a Drupal Starters doc. But it's for v5 since the module and general support selection for v6 is still a bit thin. Namely, the all important Views is still in beta.
excellent!
as usual, RTFM...
meanwhile, i must say i'm still a Wordpress enthusiast, but not just to be contrary this time.
