Having been a web-developer since 1996 I can tell you one of the biggest pains-in-the-ass is getting layouts consistent cross-browser. Back then, we had to test on Netscape, IE, and AOL. Nowadays, things have seemed to settle on either Firefox or IE7.

Why can't we leave well enough alone people? Why do you need Safari? Why Opera? You don't! Just settle on IE7 or FF.

Cuil: The Latest, Baddest AntiGoogle Looks Like A Magazine

SAN FRANCISCO — Anna Patterson's last Internet search engine was so impressive that industry leader Google Inc. bought the technology in 2004 to upgrade its own system.

She believes her latest invention is even more valuable _ only this time it's not for sale.

Patterson instead intends to upstage Google, which she quit in 2006 to develop a more comprehensive and efficient way to scour the Internet.

The end result is Cuil, pronounced "cool." Backed by $33 million in venture capital, the search engine plans to begin processing requests for the first time Monday.

Cuil had kept a low profile while Patterson, her husband, Tom Costello, and two other former Google engineers _ Russell Power and Louis Monier _ searched for better ways to search.

Now, it's boasting time.

Overview:
The clients PXE boot to the LTSP v5 server which auto-launches the Remote Desktop (rdesktop) client that auto-connects to a Windows 2003 terminal server. The result is you can take a bunch of end-of-life P2 or P3 computers, remove their hard-drives, boot them from the network and give them new life.

Bloggers, take note: the old-school Google bomb is no more.

That's right, the online behemoth best known for its search engine says that it has rejiggered its legendary and proprietary technology so that online efforts by bloggers to manipulate its top-secret search algorithm to create cheeky, offensive and decidedly off-message answers to searches will no longer work.

"It was fun" while it lasted, said Rick Klau, a member of the Google strategic partner development content acquisition team, at a search engine optimization training session for political bloggers in Washington, D.C., this afternoon. But, he said, "Google bombs don't work anymore."

Vista vs. Tiger & Inspiron vs. MacBook

I need a new laptop. Instead of buying one, I bought two and decided to live with each for a week or so and then decide which one would become *my* laptop. The two candidates are a Dell Inspiron XPS M1210 and an Apple MacBook. They both have the same core specs, same glossy monitor size, about the same weight. The Dell is running Vista and the Mac OS X 10.4.8 Tiger.

A while back I posted the recipe for my Leopard Hackintosh. I've re-done it now to work with OSX v10.5.3.

Components
- Intel D975BX2X2 (Bad Axe2) motherboard
- Nvidia 7800GTX 256MB PCI-E video card.
- 3GB RAM
- Intel Q6600 CPU
- WD Raptor 150GB 10K RPM HDD
- Pioneer IDE DVD/RW
- Apple Leopard (I purchased this so I wouldn't feel guilty and so I could put the Apple logo sticker on the chassis).

The Steps

1) Burn the Kalyway 10.5.2 ISO. This can be gotten from your favorite bittorrent tracker. I learned the hard way that it's important to A) burn the ISO at 4x and B) take care not to scratch it. Seems the installer isn't very robust when it comes to minor DVD defects. Or, perhaps I was using crappy blanks.

Many network admins (like myself) have been avoiding Vista like the plague. From my tests of it, it was just a hassle. My users have enough trouble figuring out how to deal with XP. So the last thing I want to do is throw something new at them, that includes it's own set of new quirks that my team has to learn, figure out, make infrastructure amendments for, and support.

I'm not usually the "if it ain't broke don't fix it type", but with Windows XP, I am. Vista just isn't "great" enough. So, even though there's SP1 for Vista, I'm still not ordering it on new PCs.
