Virtual Reality Getting Realer
They call it virtual reality. As if it's another reality, other than the "real" one. For example the game "Second Life". In your "Second" life you can have virtual anything, including deep and emotional relationships, as well as imaginary property that in many cases cost real money. But is it really a second reality? Scientists are just now beginning to study what has become a growing phenomenon that over 30 million people take part in, and they're finding that on "a neurological level, players may not distinguish between virtual and real-life relationships." it was bound to happen sometime, right?
i mean, we humans are always in search of pain relief. often the solution is as simple as a change of scenery for some people. games like SL provide that escapism in spades.
there are many ways to look at this but it's just like any other habit. too much of anything can be destructive.
however, in the philosophical context, this is pretty fucked up and a very interesting conversation which is better had over some pints and with hours to spare.
great post, ry.

The article definitely paints the guy out to be a loser, which he very well might be. The question "Is he cheating on his wife?" should be left to the wife. The agreement that is a relationship usually hinges on the emotional attachment more than anything else, at least that's typically been my understanding. But that's our (my wife and I's) understanding, not theirs, yours, or anyone else's. Why is this case any different than having a penpal that you write to everyday, and share things you wouldn't share with your wife? The only difference is speed of communication.
File this under virtual FUD.
