quad-core cost comparison (Apple vs Interpro)

With the release this morning of Apple's new Mac Pro Quad-Core super beasty machine I thought I'd do a cost comparison. The bottom line is the Apple, for about the same hardware, costs only a little bit more ($6200 vs $5000). Is the extra $1200 worth it for the Apple OS and hardware? (I think so!)

The Apple Mac Pro Quad-Core ($6,184.94):

Basically the same hardware from InterproMicro.com ($5,050.55):

Also it's interesting to note, for the life of me I couldn't find a 3GHz Xeon Quad-Core for sale anywhere. Where is Apple getting these?

Another thing you did not

Another thing you did not equally compare: 250GB HD on the Mac only 150GB on yours. Plus Software! Remember to get Vista on a build it yourself that is any where near Tiger you have to add $300 and then add a couple hundred dollars just to get what Mac has included - iLife! Good luck!

The 150GB HDD is 10K RPM

The 150GB HDD is 10K RPM whereas the 250GB one from Apple is 7200, so I figured that balances out, especially with storage being so cheap nowadays.

Software-wise, there's no comparison to the Mac OS IMO (but from what I've read you can run it on either system :).

Answered my own

Answered my own question...

Apparently Intel is shipping 3GHz Clovertowns in "limited production":

"We are indeed shipping a 3.0GHz Xeon version [and] expect to see faster gigahertz speeds for our high-end Extreme PCs very soon, too," Bill Kircos, wrote in an e-mail to eWeek. "For now, the product is in limited production and Apple has chosen to adopt it. We will introduce another 3.0GHz Xeon SKU [Stock Keeping Unit] later on as well."
