quad-core cost comparison (Apple vs Interpro)

With the release this morning of Apple's new Mac Pro Quad-Core super beasty machine I thought I'd do a cost comparison. The bottom line is the Apple, for about the same hardware, costs only a little bit more ($6200 vs $5000). Is the extra $1200 worth it for the Apple OS and hardware? (I think so!)

The Apple Mac Pro Quad-Core ($6,184.94):

marware gooey residue macbook

A recent convert into the wonderful world of Apple stuff, I gleefully bought the Marware Protection Pack for my 15" MacBook Pro out of over-indulgent peripheral-joy. I naively believed what it said on the package: "leaves no residue." After a week or so of having the pad stuck on the laptop I was fiddling with the corner of it and peeled it back a tad. Lo and behold there was sticky residue left on the MacBook! Ack!

so far so good - some features I'd like to see however:

- for the recent comments listing, I'd like to see what post they were
in response to, and a little more text per comment teaser too.
- perhaps a way to have a "project" content type, for example (only an example)

The Dell is running Vista and the Mac OS X 10.4.8 Tiger.

iTerm delete key when SSH'ing into Linux

Here's how to change that:

Captcha getting too smart for Humans?

The NY Times has this nifty article on the evolution of captcha-like tricks to keep robots out of websites. At first it was the annoying "type the letters you see in the picture" but now some of the math and other questions might be getting too hard for the average Joe: A Dog or a Cat?

Seagate goes downhill

I've always bought Seagate. Wouldn't even think of buying any of the cheaper stuff (Maxtor, WD). So, after one of my drive's in Obiwan went bad, I had to finally get off my butt and get an external HD for backups for one more level of sanity.

I bought one of the new Seagate Freeagent drives, a 500GB USB2 drive that could hold all of Obiwan.

A Storage Device I Want that as far as I know doesn't exist. I want one box, with a bunch of bays, into which I can place any HDD I have lying around and have that drive contribute to the overall size/parity of an array.

Anyone know where I can get something like that?

Latest Intel CPUs kill AMD

"After a year of domination by Core2, it seems more like business as usual" that Intel's latest CPUs smash AMD's even further. Not only are they easier to maintain (driver-wise), more compatible generally, but even more so outperform the competition: Intel Core 2 refreshed - QX6850 and E6750.

Overview:
The clients PXE boot to the LTSP v5 server which auto-launches the Remote Desktop (rdesktop) client that auto-connects to a Windows 2003 terminal server. The result is you can take a bunch of end-of-life P2 or P3 computers, remove their hard-drives, boot them from the network and give them new life.

Mac Worm Author Gets Death Threats

You may or may not be aware of the ongoing talk about this supposed new Mac worm. Apparently has sparked quite the controversy and the author's website was already defaced, his true identity unmasked, and he's received death threats. But what is even more hilarious are the comments on Slashdot in regards to upsetting Mac Fanboys. My favorite: "Does this mean I should end my genetic experiment to cross-pollinate a Mac fanboy with a Scientologist to produce the world's most pompous asshole? (elrous0)" Slashdot: Mac Worm Author Gets Death Threats.

Computer security experts at a company called Independent Security Evaluators have discovered a flaw in the iPhone that lets attackers gain full access to the device, potentially making users' private information privy to prying eyes.

Open Source Search

The founder of Wikipedia wants to throw his weight behind open source search tools. "His bet: like Linux became a migraine for the monopolist of the last generation, open source search tools will keep companies like Google
honest." - Google vs Jimmy Wales & Open Source Search.

selling open source to management

Here's a great Slashdot discussion started by a LAMP developer whose boss wants to move to C#/.NET. The marrow of the convo revolves around how to sell OSS to management and/or folks that don't understand how it works: Slashdot | Advocating Linux / OSS to Management.

Virtual Reality Getting Realer

As if it's another reality, other than the "real" one. For example the game "Second Life". In your "Second" life you can have virtual anything, including deep and emotional relationships, as well as imaginary property that in many cases cost real money. But is it really a second reality? Scientists are just now beginning to study what has become a growing phenomenon that over 30 million people take part in, and they're finding that on "a neurological level, players may not distinguish between virtual and real-life relationships." Article: Is This Man Cheating On His Wife? (Wall Street Journal).

new posts are groovy.

even tho new posts do not GUARANTEE traffic to a site, it's always uplifting to see "action".

remember the line from Toy Story: "Kids don't love violence, kids love ACTION!"

the best part of that movie and true.

since we're kids dressed up like adults, we're subject to the same forces.

Italian Dr. Giovanni Murtas has taken us one step closer to creating "artificial" life: "The green glow was proof that his fragile creations were capable of
keyloggers abroad (or at home)

I always get nervous when typing passwords into a public terminal, or while on a public wireless network like in an airport or elsewhere. I know how easy it is to sniff packets out of the air, or in the case of managed terminals for the admins to install simple keyloggers.

OSX 10.5 review, Leopard, doesn't quite Stack Up.

I must say I'm disappointed in Apple's latest major OS update, OSX version 10.5 "Leopard". Perhaps I haven't caught the correct vibe, or learned all the tricks yet, but it just seems like I'm paying the cost of having to spend more time getting to my files in exchange for some pretty bells. Considering the 2+ years of development time, I have to admit I expected more from Leopard.

OK so there's no question that social networking is a huge deal. Recently, while setting up my own personal blog and joining Facebook, I thought hey, why not, instead of having to be "inside" a site, just link individual blogs with each other much like profiles inside Facebook?

Leopard Getting Stacks Update

In my assessment of Apple's Leopard operating system a few weeks ago ("Leopard Doesn't Quite Stack Up") I complained about the new Stacks feature. Namely that the icons are lame and the lack of a list view like there was in Tiger was anti-functional.

The latest round in the format wars, and a formidable one, goes to Blu-Ray. Not only has Apple joined their board, which means upcoming Macs will have BD-DVD drives, but longtime HD-DVD supporter Warner Bros has dropped it in favor of Blu-Ray.

I need a Hi-Def converter app

Alright, I'm putting the official word out. Because I love my HD-DVD player too much I am not getting a Blu-Ray player. However, I did pick up the LG dual format HD drive from my Vista machine, so if Blu-Ray is really taking over 3/4ths of the DVD titles like they say they are, supposedly I can rip them and still watch, correct?

RealPlayer is BadWare

It's kind of a shame because I remember "back in the day" when Real Player was just a startup and their product was slim, trim, effective, and unique. It didn't take long for it to become crap, and it's been so for 10 years now I suppose. And recently it was officially labeled as so: http://blogs.pcworld.com/staffblog/archives/006421.html

30% of Security Measures are a Waste of Time

The guy who wrote the core code for Norton Antivirus thinks that the traditional measures taken by IT security pros (like vulnerability patching and strong passwords) are generally a waste of time: http://www.darkreading.com/document.asp?doc_id=145224&WT.svl=news1_1.

Drupal Multisite on Bluehost

The following outlines my setup of Drupal in a multisite fashion on the webhost Bluehost. This lets you serve sites from one Drupal codebase with each site having its own database, domain name / URL, and themes/modules/file store. You can even go a step further with Bluehost and allow different people FTP access to just their Drupal site.
